Organising categories and subcategories
Organise your docs into categories and subcategories so readers can browse by topic. A clear structure makes your help centre easier to navigate and helps search and the AI assistant find the right doc.

Plan your structure
Before you create categories, list the main tasks your readers want to complete and group them. A typical product help centre uses this structure:
| Category | Contains |
|---|---|
| Get Started | Installation and first-time setup |
| Customise | Appearance and settings |
| Features | How each feature works |
| Troubleshooting | Fixes for common problems |
Create a subcategory
Open Categories
Go to PinkDocs → Categories.
Enter the subcategory details
Enter a Name and Description, and choose the existing category as the Parent.
📷 Image placeholder: the Add New Category form with a parent category selected.
Save it
Click Add New Category. The subcategory appears under its parent in the sidebar once it has a published doc.
Move a category
Edit the category
On PinkDocs → Categories, hover over the category and click Edit.
Change the parent
Choose a new Parent, or choose None to make it a top-level category.
Update
Click Update. All docs in the category move with it.
Rename or merge categories
To rename a category, edit it and change its Name. To merge two categories:
Move the docs
Open each doc in the category you want to remove, tick the category you're keeping and untick the old one.
Delete the empty category
Once the old category is empty, delete it from PinkDocs → Categories.
Common questions
Keep to one level of subcategories. Deeper nesting makes docs harder to find.
Empty categories are hidden. Publish at least one doc in the category.
